Japanese Netsuke

Netsuke – a form of miniature sculpture that developed in Japan during the last 300 years. Netsuke served not only for aesthetic purposes, but also had a functional purpose. Kimono, the traditional form of Japanese dress, had no no pockets. Women were put small personal items into their sleeves, or hung in pouches on silk cord at the waist kimono. These items are hung on a belt called sagemono. To stop the cord from further slip used netsuke.

The most popular pronunciation of the Japanese netsken, which means "moving jet ski." Sliding bead (ojime) was stretched on the cord between the netsuke and sagemono, so that you can pull or loosen the opening sagemono. All this functioned as a sort of removable pocket, which was mounted on the thigh. All three subjects (netsuke, ojime, sagemono) are often decorated with complex designs carved or inlaid with rare and exotic materials such as wood, precious metals, shells, coral, semiprecious stones, and of course the bone. They are still a form of national art and collectibles. Bone-mineralized connective tissue consisting of minerals, proteins and lipids. To identify the products of the bone, you can use a magnifying glass with a 10-fold increase. Connecting channels can be seen on the polished surface of the bone. These canals appear as pits or scratch, which often emphasizes their darker color due to pollution.

In the late nineteenth century, products from Japan have come into vogue in European countries, and netsuke sold quite cheaply. There were many collectors, who carried away with collecting netsuke. Therefore, a large number of the best examples of netsuke is currently in Western collections collections outside Japan. Prices for collectible netsuke are in within the $ 100-1000. The highest price associated with the names of several well-known masters. But in general, a signature on the value of netsuke has no significant impact, as well as the material does not impose any particular value framework for the cost of netsuke. The value of netsuke is primarily a question of quality of cut, novelty, originality and fascinating subject.
